Chandika Devi Mandir, Dabhol
The Chandika Temple, believed to date back to the Pandavas' era, is a sacred cave shrine with intriguing legends. It is said that the Pandavas created the temple using divine powers during their exile, with tunnels leading to Kashi.
According to lore, the goddess appeared in the dream of Jamna Puri, a saint from the Gosavi sect, guiding him to the hidden cave and its idol, which is partly underground.
Jamna Puri began worshiping the goddess, passing the duty to his successors. The Puri family, now in its 32nd generation, continues to oversee the temple's rituals and maintenance, without accepting donations.
Located on a plateau 1 km from the Dapoli-Dabhol highway and 3-4 km from Dabhol harbor, the temple is surrounded by dense trees and rocks, with a stream flowing nearby during the rainy season. The svayambhu (self-manifested) three-foot-tall stone idol of Goddess Chandika, covered in vermillion and wielding weapons, is housed in a natural cave of jet-black stone.
The temple attracts more visitors during Navaratri, and only vegetarian offerings are allowed. Shivaji Maharaj is said to have visited the temple to seek the goddess's blessings.
